Port wine is exclusively produced from the northern provinces of Portugal. Usually it is a sweet tasting wine that is often served as desert wine although there are different varieties that can be dry and even in the white variety though the more typical and common kind is the aforementioned red desert wine.
When you buy a wine labelled port in the US it will be produced in the united states. If you want an original for Portugal, you will want to find one that comes with a label that says either Porto or Oporto most commonly.

Overall port wine is an excellent beverage of choice especially if you are a bit of a wine connoisseur yourself. While other wines may be slightly better in the long run thanks to being typically lesser on alcohol and sugar content port wine still is a great wine to consume in smaller amounts.
